Baan by Collective Canvas
Collective Canvas is all about simplicity from their material selection to aesthetic. The Baan is their version of the classic tennis silhouettes of the 1970s.
Why they’re good?
The company makes the uppers from organic cotton canvas and soles from 100% natural latex (tree sap). While the insoles are a made from cork & castor bean oil and the laces are organic cotton.
The saying, “they don’t make them like they used to” holds more than a grain of truth. High quality craftsmanship has been replaced by fast fashion’s need for speed, quantity, and cost cutting. Collective Canvas is swimming against the current and slowing things down. They do this by returning to traditional shoe making techniques. These features include, a traditional butterfly tongue, double-wrapped foxing construction, and the use of heavy duty 12.5oz duck canvas.
All Collective Canvas shoes are made at a single factory in China. This allows them to regularly visit the factory every few months. In doing so they can make sure that all workers are provided decent working conditions. Collective Canvas also avoids exposing their workers to the toxic fumes of synthetic shoe glues by replacing them with water-based glues.
